About the Therapist
Sally Thomson BN AThR
An experienced art therapist and counsellor, Sally’s approach is warm and compassionate, grounded in respect for each person’s experience and the understanding that, even in times of difficulty, people have strengths and inner resources that can support healing and change.
Her practice integrates art therapy and counselling and is increasingly informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), a respectful and non-pathologising approach to understanding the different parts of ourselves and the ways they may carry difficult experiences or develop protective roles.
Sally’s work is also informed by an understanding of trauma and attachment, and the ways past experiences can continue to influence emotions, relationships and patterns of behaviour. Depending on each person’s needs and preferences, sessions may involve talking therapy, creative processes, or a combination of both.
Health and an interest in people have been common threads throughout Sally’s working life, with broadranging experience in healthcare including nursing training at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, the pharmaceutical industry and medical fundraising management.
Drawn to return to working directly with people, Sally brought together her background in health care and a longstanding involvement in the visual arts. After gaining clinical experience in Sydney, she established an art therapy and counselling practice in the Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands.
Sally holds a Master of Art Therapy and Graduate Certificate in Counselling from Western Sydney University and a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Sydney. Her visual arts training began at East Sydney Technical College (now National Art School) and continues through her own art practice and ongoing professional development.
